Costus scaber occurs in the Neotropics from central Mexico to Bolivia and Brazil, and in West Indies (including Trinidad and Tobago). It grows in tropical and subtropical forests. This is a herb, 0.5-2.5 m in height. The leaves are sessile, elliptic, 10-25 cm long. The terminal inflorescence is 5-12 cm long, and made up of orange-red bracts and orange-yellow tubular flowers. The fruit is a capsule. C. scaber flowers during the rainy season; it is pollinated by hummingbirds.
